French noir thriller coming to R1 DVD

US company Zeitgeist Films will release the 1962 espionage thriller Le combat dans l'île aka Fire and Ice - starring Romy Schneider and Jean-Louis Trintignant and directed by Alain Cavalier - on June 22.

A hidden gem of the French New Wave, Alain Cavalier's thrilling black-and-white noir is as sleek and cool as it is gripping. Filled with thrilling plot twists, daring shoot-outs and stormy betrayals, LE COMBAT DANS L'ILE takes place against a backdrop of 60 s political turmoil and is strikingly shot by legendary cameraman Pierre Lhomme (Army of Shadows, King of Hearts).

Jean-Louis Trintignant (Z, The Conformist) is Clément, a member of a right-wing terrorist organization who becomes involved in a political assassination attempt. A member of his gang betrays him and he hides out with his wife Anne (a luminous Romy Schneider) in the country home of a childhood friend, Paul (Henri Serre, Jim of Jules and Jim). Clément defines macho, with his surly incommunicativeness and sudden outbursts of violence, with Anne often its recipient. Paul, by contrast, is a gentle pacifist, and as affection grows between him and Anne, the emotional as well as political tension soar.

The girls hop from one bed to another and quickly begin getting rich. Everything seems to go smooth and fine as planned until something unpredictable comes up. What happens when finally Cupid comes knocking at your door and you fall in love with your own prey?

While waiting for the babysitter they get assaulted by a viciously violent sex maniac. The man wreaks disastrous havoc on their lives. Giorgio ends up beaten to a pulp, while helpless Luisa and the babysitter have to witness the horror. But the worst of all fate awaits beautiful Luisa. But no woman is as dangerous as a woman who seeks revenge.

Her name was 'Joy Laurey', the pseudonym of the French-American supermodel whose 1981 autobiography became the most scandalous erotic memoir of the decade. Two years later, notorious director Sergio Bergonzelli (creator of the psycho-Freudian filth-fest IN THE FOLDS OF THE FLESH) brought Joy's scorching saga to the screen and launched an all-new series of sensual movie classics. Succulent Canadian starlet Claudia Udy (DRAGONARD) leaves nothing to the imagination as the globetrotting celebrity whose passion for men, women and strangers – in any combination – shatters every sexual taboo.

It is rivaled only by the EMMANUELLE series for its daring sexuality and enduring popularity. And in this first – and best – sequel to the erotic smash JOY, French hardcore goddess turned respected actress Brigitte Lahaie (HENRY & JUNE) takes over the titular role of the international supermodel with a relentless passion for sexual pleasure. This time, Joy flees the betrayals and depravities of her male lovers only to find ecstasy with a gorgeous tour guide (the delicious Isabelle Solar). But can one woman find a way to fulfill Joy's most intimate and shocking desire?

The rajah of Punjab wants to come into possession of a famous gem known as "Mountain of Light". He asks adventurer Allan Foster to steal it for him, but Foster has other plans and he's not willing to share this precious booty. Cult director Umberto Lenzi directs a true gem of a Euro-adventure stomper! Taken from the famous Emilio Salgari's novel and starring cult-stalwart Richard Harrison, "Sandok" is a cinematic adventure that tastes like the good old days.

British mondo LEGEND OF THE WITCHES from VCI

Coming from VCI on April 27, this seems to be the complete version. It was previously released in the UK by DD Entertainment in a severly edited version.

The historical origins of witchcraft in moon-worship and the witches legend of creation. Initiation rites undergone by the modern witch divination by birds and animals; Christianity s absorption of pagan rites; revenge killing; the Black Mass. Cecil Williamson's Museum of Witchcraft in Cornwall. Investigations into the efficacy of witchcraft; extra-sensory perception; foretelling the future. All featuring the infamous "King Of The Witches" in the only footage in existance of the King Of Wicca. Alexander Saunders.. who uses this documentary to guide us through his coven. By then, Sanders had been endorsed by a group of 1,623 practicing Wiccans as 'King of the Witches' - with Maxine as 'Witch Queen' - and he turned into a media celebrity. There were TV appearances, late-night talks on radio, a sympathetic biography, record albums of his rituals and this film, The Legend of The Witches, based on his exploits. These were said to include healing people of warts by 'wishing them on someone else, who's already ugly'. Another woman was supposedly cured of cander by Sanders sitting with her in hospital for three days and nights, holding her feet and pouring 'healing energy' into her. Sanders and Maxine parted in 1973 and he drifted into semi-retirement before moving to Bexhill in East Sussex, where he died in 1988. Like Gardner, his legacy was his own tradition of ritual and belief within the Wicca movement - dubbed 'Alexandrian' in a play on his first name. 87 min., B&W, 1969.

April 27 Mya cover artwork and synopses

Famous writer Sonia Petrova is killed after a night spent in a seedy motel with her lover. Her husband Peter is immediately taken in by the police and questioned. Ivan Zanova, the detective investigating Sonia's murder, is aware of the fact that both Peter and his wife had adulterous affairs. When a homeless guy confesses the murder, Zanova believes that this bad case is finally closed. But a few days later, Peter's mistress suffers Sonia's same fate by the hand of a mysterious killer, and Ivan understands that there is more than meets the eye in these two killings.

A heinous murder shakes Rome and its self-complacent upper class at its core. The beautiful daughter of a well known surgeon has been brutally slaughtered. No stone is left unturned to hunt down the killer, but the police investigations are focused mainly on the shady underbelly of the Roman jet set. Soon the truth rears its ugly head: the girl was the innocent victim of an atrocious white slave trade headed by a ruthless Dutchman. Yet he is only a puppet in the hands of a higher ranking puppeteer whose strings are attached to a lot of unpredictable characters.

An aging businessman marries a much younger woman but he just can't let go of his affair with his secretary. As soon as the young niece of his freshly married wife steps over the threshold of his house, the poor chap can't think of anything else but to bed her by all means. The fiendishly clever girl is very well aware of what the horny guy lusts after, and teases him by tiptoeing around in very short miniskirts which allow a very tasty view of her panties. Desperate and exhausted, the man comes up with a plan that involves a... butcher.
